The Beginning of the End
0The big news in Ireland today is that Eircom have agreed to crack down on users illegally downloading music. The “three strikes and you are out” rule has come about through pressure for the record companies.
As part of the settlement, the record companies will supply Eircom with the IP addresses of all persons who they detect illegally uploading or downloading copyright works.
Eircom will then contact the subscribers directly and either warn them or terminate their account.
This move brings us into a strange situation where it’s no longer just governments shutting down the internet but now we have the multinational companies. This is just another step in a long line of things that have been happening over the last year and especially over the last few months. Even YouTube have resorted to muting videos that contain copyright music.
Each thing on its own might be seen as an acceptable step but looking at the bigger picture these people are slowly closing down the net. When will these companies just give up and embrace the technology of the 21st century? They might find themselves better off if they did.
Rhodium possible HTC Touch HD Pro???
0In last week’s post about how I want a new phone I suggested a HTC Touch HD with the slide out keyboard of the Touch Pro would be excatly what I wanted. While doing some searching around the net since I’ve found several reports about leaked photos of HTC’s range for ’09.
Included in the photos is what’s called the Rhodium, which would look to be what I want and from the pictures I’m guessing will be called something like Touch HD Pro.

I would like to say it here that if this phone is coming out later this year could the people at HTC please please send me one to review???

New Cadbury Ad
0Quick note to say the company putting together these ads for Cadbury’s must be a great place to work and really deserve all the praise they get. Keep up the great work and keep pushing that bar up inch by inch.
I want a new phone
0I’ve been looking around lately for a new phone but just can’t seem to find anything that fits in with what I want. At the moment I have the O2 Xda Orbit II which at the beginning I saw as a great upgrade from the original Obit but it’s just starting to annoy me now. I’m getting sick of touch screen keyboards, my thumbs are not made for those and the number of txt messages I send has decreased because of it (not a bad thing). Then there’s just small issues like no headphone jack, I have to remember to take the adapter with me whenever I’m travelling but more often than not it gets left behind. The other problem is the screen itself because there’s some sort of shiny reflective coating on the screen it means it’s next to impossible to use out doors and you have to constantly wipe it.
Now for the good points, the screen size is great for watching movies whenever I do remeber to bring the headphone adapter. The micro SD card goes into a slot on the side where as before you had to take the battery out and finally it runs pretty quick on windows mobile 6 making media players and sat sav programs real easy to use.
Now as I said at the start I want to change to a new phone but just can’t find anything that will tempt me away and no I don’t want an iPhone. Now don’t get me wrong I like the Macs and the iPods but I just can’t bring myself to like the iPhone. I see it has a huge waste by a company that had a chance to make something great. Just a quick point if you’re going to bring out a product that’s suppose to be the best and most state of the art of it’s kind then you’d want that product to do all and have all the basic features that your competitors have and do, most people should know what I’m talking about here.
Anyway the things I want in my new phone would be:
- Some sort of QWERTY keyboard
- 3G
- GPS
- Some form of large internal memory and if not, a memory card slot
- Headphone socket on the phone, no need for external adapters
- WiFi
- Windows Mobile, so that I can install my own programs
Now looking at those points you’d think that souldn’t be to hard to find but as of yet I’ve come up short. I’ve looked around and the cloest I could find was the HTC Touch range. The Touch pro looks perfect until you look at the two models up from it and I’m left thinking if only the Touch HD had the keyboard from the pro and I’d be running out to buy one.
Another one I found was the MWg Zinc II again looks really good but I think I’d still have trouble with it’s keyboard.
I was about to give up until I saw a piece in yesterday’s Irish Times In Gear magazine about gadgets for 2009 and they mentioned the new Palm pre coming out later this year. Now this looks like a real interesting phone apart from the fact it will use the palm OS it could be well worth looking at and is being tipped as the iPhone killer. There’s a few videos of it on YouTube but this one gives a good quick overview
So I’m left with the choice, if anyone wants to leave a comment swaying me one way or another or even better if any of the companies want to send me a phone to test that would be great.
Boxxy on YouTube
0Ok so it’s been awhile since I last posted anything but honestly there hasn’t been anything to post about. That changed the other night when I was doing my usual trawl through YouTube and stumbled across a rather strange but funny girl called Boxxy. I’ve no idea who this girl is or if she’s for real (I’ll come to that in a minute) but after watching her videos, subscribing and moving on thinking I’ll not see anything from her for awhile, she popped up yesterday in an unbelievable nod from sxePhil in his Monday video
Now when I watched her videos and subscribed, her latest video had a few thousand views and I was around the 8,500th subscriber but looking at it now her latest video has over half a million views and she has over 13,000 subscribers. Ok so some would say that just proves the power that sxePhil has but there’s another point to this.
As I said earlier I’m left wondering is Boxxy for real or is this a brilliant marketing strategy by the Gaia website, which Boxxy mentions repeatedly in her videos. Now I’m guessing that since her video views have shot up, that like me most people asked themselves “What the hell is this Gaia website she’s going on about?” and doing a quick search would have found Gaia Online. I’m guessing that their visitor stats have shot up in the last few days and if Boxxy is not working for them then they definitely owe her something.
Don’t get me wrong I hope Boxxy is for real because in this time of recession, job losses and general negativity we need someone to brighten our days, make us all feel a bit better and help us to see that the world isn’t all sad and down beat that there’s still people out there that’ll be happy no matter what.
So Boxxy it’s a great start to your YouTube career and I hope you keep it up, as for me I hope to get back to writing some regular posts again. I’ll finish this post with Boxxy’s latest video.
