Who Wants to be a YouTubillionaire

Posted by Joe on September 16, 2009

I’m sure most people would have see this by now but I thought it was worth a mention as it’s really well done.

It’s an interactive YouTube video based on the quiz show “Who wants to be a millionaire” made up of several different videos from different users. You make your way through the videos by answering the questions and if you get stuck you can call one of the familiar faces from YouTube to ask for help.

If you haven’t seen it before give it a go

Simply an Unreal Shot

This is the best video I’ve seen for awhile on the net. All I can say is enjoy

The Beginning of the End

Posted by Joe on January 29, 2009

The big news in Ireland today is that Eircom have agreed to crack down on users illegally downloading music. The “three strikes and you are out” rule has come about through pressure for the record companies.

As part of the settlement, the record companies will supply Eircom with the IP addresses of all persons who they detect illegally uploading or downloading copyright works.

Eircom will then contact the subscribers directly and either warn them or terminate their account.

This move brings us into a strange situation where it’s no longer just governments shutting down the internet but now we have the multinational companies. This is just another step in a long line of things that have been happening over the last year and especially over the last few months. Even YouTube have resorted to muting videos that contain copyright music.

Each thing on its own might be seen as an acceptable step but looking at the bigger picture these people are slowly closing down the net. When will these companies just give up and embrace the technology of the 21st century? They might find themselves better off if they did.

Boxxy on YouTube

Posted by Joe on January 13, 2009

Ok so it’s been awhile since I last posted anything but honestly there hasn’t been anything to post about. That changed the other night when I was doing my usual trawl through YouTube and stumbled across a rather strange but funny girl called Boxxy. I’ve no idea who this girl is or if she’s for real (I’ll come to that in a minute) but after watching her videos, subscribing and moving on thinking I’ll not see anything from her for awhile, she popped up yesterday in an unbelievable nod from sxePhil in his Monday video

Now when I watched her videos and subscribed, her latest video had a few thousand views and I was around the 8,500th subscriber but looking at it now her latest video has over half a million views and she has over 13,000 subscribers. Ok so some would say that just proves the power that sxePhil has but there’s another point to this.

As I said earlier I’m left wondering is Boxxy for real or is this a brilliant marketing strategy by the Gaia website, which Boxxy mentions repeatedly in her videos. Now I’m guessing that since her video views have shot up, that like me most people asked themselves “What the hell is this Gaia website she’s going on about?” and doing a quick search would have found Gaia Online. I’m guessing that their visitor stats have shot up in the last few days and if Boxxy is not working for them then they definitely owe her something.

Don’t get me wrong I hope Boxxy is for real because in this time of recession, job losses and general negativity we need someone to brighten our days, make us all feel a bit better and help us to see that the world isn’t all sad and down beat that there’s still people out there that’ll be happy no matter what.

So Boxxy it’s a great start to your YouTube career and I hope you keep it up, as for me I hope to get back to writing some regular posts again. I’ll finish this post with Boxxy’s latest video.

Bebo Visitors Map Settings

Bebo Map Settings

From the comments being left on my other posts people seem to be having trouble with the visitors map feature on Bebo.

The above picture shows the box at the top of the visitors map page and shows your current account setting and the options to which you can change it. The box on the left shows your current setting, which in this case is “Public”. On the right shows the two options you can change this to, Anonymous and Off. Your profile has to be set to Public in order to see the pins on the map. Point to note here is that Bebo seem to be only showing pins for people who have visited your profile in the last 24 hours, so your map might have nothing on it for times.

If you see something different from what’s in the picture above then your account is different in some way. I’m guessing Bebo have different settings depending on your age.

Hope this helps some people

Glenties.ie – My hometown website

Posted by Joe on September 4, 2007

I’m sorry but this is just a shameless plug for my hometown’s website glenties.ie, which seems to be lagging in the google rankings for some reason.

If anyone’s interested please check it out. You’ll find information on our Harvest Fair Festival, the Halloween Ball (which I won last year with my Dr. Octavius costume), the Fiddler’s Weekend and lots lots more. Thanks

engadget – The hundred gadget giveaway

Posted by Joe on September 4, 2007

Chris form The I Spy Site pointed this out to me earlier. The website engadget are giving away 100 gadgets for free. Here’s how it works:

Since we can’t give all this stuff away individually (100+ giveaways would equate to a new giveaway every two hours for more than seven days, which would drive everyone friggin nuts), we’re going to have four giveaway rounds a day, once every six hours. Each round will have three prizes of varying radness and will be open for entries only for six hours. You can enter ONCE per round on as many rounds you like (until you win something, that is). Winners will be selected randomly.

So all you have to do is leave a comment, what have you to loose. See the full story here

Bebo Changes

Posted by Joe on August 24, 2007

Since my previous 2 posts about Bebo features:
Bebo launch profile views stats
Bebo – Finally see who’s viewing your profile

There has been some changes in the positioning of the links that are mentioned in the posts.

Bebo Changes

The above picture shows the box that appears on the home or changes page. I’ve circled the 2 items beside “Views:”. The first item the number, circled in red, is a link to the profile views stats page and the second item the word map, circled in green, is a link to the map page. Hope this makes it easier for people to find these features.

I’ve also noticed that a large majority of the traffic coming to my site is for the Bebo posts so if there’s anything that you want to know about on Bebo just ask and I’ll try to find the answers for you.

Chinese baby named ‘at’ symbol

Posted by Joe on August 22, 2007

This article appeared in this week’s TechCentral.ie newsletter.

It’s about a Chinese couple who want to name their new baby boy ‘@’. I thought it was pretty cool and wondered why no one has tried to do this already and as the article says:

To a Mandarin speaker, saying the word ‘at’ in English sounds like ‘ai ta’ which means ‘love him’.

So at least it has some meaning but they also came up with the downside:

baby @ will find creating an email account a problem as most providers prohibit the use of special symbols as part of the user name

Bebo launch profile views stats

Posted by Joe on August 7, 2007

The latest feature to be added to Bebo is a profile views stats page. This new page shows you the number of people who have viewed your profile on hourly, daily, weekly or monthly basis.

Bebo Profile Views Stats

This new feature is not available on everyone’s profile yet, I’ll explain in a minute how to get it but first for you that do have it here’s where to find it.

On you’re profile page where it displays the number of profile views you have, this number will now be a link which if clicked will take you straight to the above page, Good Times!

Now if you don’t have the direct link then here’s the workaround for now before Bebo change it.
Log in to Bebo as normal and go to your profile page
Click on a friend in your top 16 preferably one that has you in their top 16
On your friend’s profile click on your profile in their top 16
If you’ve done this correctly you should get something like the following in your address bar

http://www.bebo.com/Profile.jsp?MemberId=1127692393

If you now change the word “Profile” in that address to “ViewCounter” (this is case sensitive it has to be exactly as it is here) making the address look like this

http://www.bebo.com/ViewCounter.jsp?MemberId=1127692393

And hit enter or go or whatever needs to be done to go to that page you will see your stats, Good Times!

If anyone is having trouble with this just give me a shout and it you like what you get leave me a comment.
